MY LESSONS IN THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

Learning the Alexander Technique has allowed me to walk taller (look slimmer).

I don't experience the nagging ache between my shoulder blades anymore.

I'm aware of my body's response to stress and immediately self correct. I then consciously think about the reasons why I am tense and work through these, rather than leave the stress in my back!

I feel more centred, calm.

I sit more elegantly.

I can walk up and down stairs without my body creaking (my knees).

MY LAST FALL WAS A REAL PLEASURE

I lived with chronic back pain for three years. The ongoing pain was both constant and severe and my back would also spasm without warning, causing me to fall over until the pain subsided. Some more spectacular falls included one in a tram going up Victoria Peak in Hong Kong and one on a double decker bus in London.

In those three years I went to doctors, chiropractors, osteopaths and an acupuncturist without success, and I always carried Valium for emergencies. Even if I wasn't in pain, I was always tentative, hyper-vigilant and fearful. In that time I gave up many activities including gym and swimming. It's no fun sinking to the bottom of a pool when your back spasms.

And then I found Alexander Technique and Shona. The relief was instant and the healing ongoing. Unlearning years of bad postural habits means I am now mindful of my body rather than hyper-vigilant about protecting my back. It's a huge difference.

The last time I fell over was when I was walking my dogs at dusk and I couldn't see where I was going in the rough terrain. This time there was no pain and no spasm. I actually laughed. It was such a pleasure to be alive and well.
